TASKMSTR Product Overview
The TASKMSTR system is a task control, scheduling and user interface subsystem for any Concurrent Computer Corp. OS/32 system. With its advanced algorithms for task control coupled with an innovative system of grouping tasks into flexibly-defined sets, TASKMSTR can:
- Significantly improve total system throughput by increasing CPU-to-I/O overlap while making more of the capacity available for the most important tasks.
- Allow "exceptions" to general rules on user task priority for special users or jobs; enable scheduling of special cases at greater or lesser priority than others.
- Generally reduce the impact of batch-type processes, or any other less-critical activity, on key foreground or interactive work
- Reduce the inherent conflicts resulting from subsystems, such as MTM and Reliance, using different internal scheduling mechanisms.
- Enforce a true inactivity timeout across any or all users.
- Ease system operation by allowing control of naturally-grouped sets of tasks via single commands, permitting rapid response to special situations and displaying status according to task set.
- Improve system reliability by immediately detecting improper task absences or pauses and repeatedly warning until the situation is remedied, thus avoiding many problems stemming from messages scrolling off the console before they are seen.
- Maximize utilization of MultiProcessor Systems (MPS) by controlling task assignments to LPUs and/or providing pseudo-timeslicing on each APU queue.
- ... all at a typical cost of 2% to 6% of the CPU!
TASKMSTR can revitalize a heavily loaded system, increase usable capacity and make possible levels of system control otherwise impossible. It can effectively manage different subsystems as peers, sharing equally in whatever resources are available or do a superior job of assuring individual users or subsystems unhindered access to the system.
