FILEMSHR Product Overview

FILEMSHR is an integrated file compression and archiving utility operating identically within OS/32 or MSDOS environments.

FILEMSHR:

· Is a flexible, reliable, high-performance program to compress files into a library. The resulting 'MSH' file may be LISTed, or have members ADDed or EXTRACTed individually or by powerful pattern-matching. It is a true "WYEIWYA" ("What You Extract Is What You Archived") system, preserving filetype, record and block lengths, dates, etc., unless its considerable flexibilities are used to override any of these properties of the MSHed file.

· Saves storage space and processing time. The reduced disk space requirement causes many second-level savings in both space and time. Backups, for example, take much less space (fewer reels of tape, etc.) and less time to accomplish. The transfer of the MSHed file over a data communications link is both faster and simpler. System overhead for both disk and core directories is reduced proportionately to the fewer number of files maintained.

· Provides the key to a fully-integrated OS/32 - PC development and system support environment. By allowing the maintenance of files on either or both of the two platforms, the restrictions of PC-only tools are eliminated. Since the MSH file is 100% compatible between the environments, a file may be extracted from the MSH under either OS, modified and replaced, with the new MSH file being wholly acceptable to either OS.

· Enhances the integrity of archived libraries. A set of source updates, for example, may be maintained in a single MSH file, reducing the chance of some small member being inadvertently modified or deleted. FILEMSHR may be invoked as part of the normal edit and update procedure to extract, modify, and replace the member. Products and product revisions may be more reliably "frozen" by being MSHed into a single, archivable unit.
